Teaching Fellow: MARI204 - Marine Ecology and Ecosystems
2nd Year Undergraduate Course, University of Otago, Department of Marine Science, 2026

In 2026, I am again a Teaching Fellow in MARI204 - Marine Ecology. MARI204 (ex-MARI301) is a second year undergraduate course focused on the ecology of marine organisms, their interactions, biotic and abiotic factors that influence patterns and ecological processes in benthic and pelagic environments.
My responsibilities have included the following:
- Preparation and delivery of lectures:
- Introduction to eDNA
- Diseases in Marine Ecosystems
- The Role of Microbes in Marine Ecosystems
- Development of content and curriculum items, workshops, and practicals, including:
- Analysis of genetic data; bioinformatics and phylogenetics
- Analysis of ecological transect data incl. statistics
- Scientific illustration
- Running field and computer practicals, classroom workshop sessions
- Course administration (primary point of contact for students, Brightspace site maintenance and assessment curation, timetabling, etc)
- Development and marking of assessments
